    How much time do you spend cleaning the shower head? If you live in an area with hard water, set a reminder on your phone to clean the shower head at least once a month. Regular cleaning can also reduce the risk of bacteria and mold growth in your showerhead.

    Don’t use use bleach to clean showerhead. Researchers found that chlorine bleach actually increased the production of harmful bacteria in on the shower heads studied. Plus, bleach can be caustic and ruin clothes, so it’s better to avoid it. (Save the bleach for another day, it won’t fight hard water)

    It may be necessary to clean out your showerhead if it has been clogged for years and need a more thorough cleaning with mineral deposits. You don’t need to use harsh chemicals, which can not only cause chemical reaction. Instead, you can try using vinegar and water to clean your shower head.

    Method 1

    Cleaning Removable Showerheads

    Get your supplies. Take your showerhead off the shower arm and soak it in vinegar.

    Pot, bucket or another container large enough to completely submerged the showerhead.

    Distilled white vinegar.

    Optional: Old rag and adjustable wrench.

    Soft cloths, such as microfiber and flannel.

    Turn the showerhead counterclockwise. Wrap an old rag around it and twist it with a adjustable wrench. The rag will protect your showerhead’s surface. 

    You can place the showerhead in a small pot. This will allow you to use less vinegar. A small bag or plastic container can be used.

    Pour enough white vinegar into the large bowl to cover the showerhead. The vinegar’s acids will dissolve any white mineral deposits.

    The vinegar shower head soak needs to sit for several hours.

    Cleaning Removable Showerheads

    If you’re in a hurry and the showerhead is nickel coated head showers, you can put the pot on the stove to simmer the vinegar for 15 mins.

    If your showerhead is brass or has a nickel coated shower heads or gold finish, you can take it out after 30 mins.

    Use an old brush to remove any soap scum. This is the area where most mineral buildup occurs. Use a soft brush to remove any soap scum. Rinse the brush with cool water. Continue doing this until you get rid of all residues.

    To polish the showerhead, use a soft cloth. A microfiber cloth can also be used. Use a soft cloth to wipe the showerhead until it is dry.

    Attach the showerhead to the shower arm. Use plumbing tape to wrap the threaded end of the shower arm counterclockwise.

    Turn on and let the water flow in the shower for a few seconds to rinse out any toothpaste residue.

    Method 2

    A large plastic bag that can be placed over the showerhead

    A twist tie or a rubber bands.

    Distilled white vinegar or apple cider vinegar works too.

    An old toothbrush, Soft cloths, such as microfiber and flannel.

    You should only fill the plastic bag about half way with vinegar. Otherwise, the vinegar will leak out when you put the showerhead halfway.

    And lace the plastic bag on top of the showerhead. Pull the bag open. Slowly lift the bag upwards so that the showerhead soak completely.

    Attach the bag to your showerhead using a rubber band or twist tie. Before you go to your daily tasks, carefully release the bag.

    Allow the showerhead to soak for 30 minutes overnight. The bag should be removed after 30 minutes if the showerhead has a nickel or brass coating. After you have rinsed your showerhead, you can continue the process.

    Let the water run for a while, then turn off the water. This will remove any mineral deposits from the showerhead.

    Use an old toothbrush to clean a shower head. Next, turn off the water. This is where you will find the most buildup. To flush out more residue, turn the water on once again. Continue to clean the showerhead, turning on the water until there is no more mineral residue.

    Turn off the water and gently polish the showerhead using a soft cloth. Use the cloth to gently buff the surface of your showerhead until you no longer see water spots.

    Cleaning the shower head without acidic vinegar

    You can substitute distilled white vinegar with a soak in apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, and water. Both lemon juice and apple cider vinegar contain acids that can dissolve mineral deposits. The same cleaning and soaking instructions should be followed.

    You don’t have to wait for your shower head to soak before you scrub it with an old toothbrush, baking soda or salt paste and some lemon juice. Run hot water through your shower head after you have finished scrubbing. You can remove the shower head if you can clean the exterior and interior. Rinse the shower head and reassemble it.

    If these natural methods fail, you can use a commercial descaler to clean your showerhead.

    How to clean the filter screen in a showerhead

    If the showerhead is still sputtering even after cleaning it, you must take it apart and inspect the filter screen.

    Use a wrench or locking pliers to remove the shower head.

    To remove any debris, flush the interior with water.

    Take the filter screen off using needle-nose pliers.

    Rinse the filter screen using water. To remove any mineral buildup on the screen, soak it in vinegar for few hours and clean it with a commercial scaler.

    Follow the steps to clean the rest of your shower head.

    Install the filter screen again and attach the showerhead.

    To flush out any debris, run the shower at maximum water pressure for several minutes.

    How to Clean a clogged showerhead?

    Use vinegar, lemon juice or a commercial cleanser to remove any mineral deposits. This will also help unclog your showerhead. You can also clean the fixture’s exterior with the cleaners. To remove mineral buildup from the shower nozzle, follow the above steps. To restore the shine, dry the fixture and wipe it clean with a dry cloth.
